We were commissioned to create a drinks buffet as part of a broader restaurant renovation. The brief was to design a piece in Australian native timber that complemented the restaurant’s interior, responded to its relaxed Moreton Bay waterfront setting.
Working closely with the client, we designed and handcrafted a custom Blackbutt drinks buffet that provides practical storage while complementing the restaurant’s interior.
We designed the cabinet around traditional mortise and tenon joinery, incorporating solid floating timber panels and woven brass mesh into the door fronts. We hand-turned the American walnut handles to introduce a subtle contrast against the Blackbutt and selected a single piece of timber for the three drawer fronts, allowing the grain to continue naturally across the face of the cabinet.
For the rear panels we chose a natural hand woven grasscloth that adds texture and connects the piece to the restaurant’s relaxed Moreton Bay waterfront setting. Inside, we made hand-cut sawtooth shelf supports so the shelves could be repositioned as required, along with solid Maple drawer boxes suited to the demands of daily restaurant use.
The completed buffet now sits within the dining area, providing the storage and serving space required for everyday service.
